Recently, I came across news that the Lufthansa Group plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 4,000 employees by 2030 due to the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation technologies. 😮

This news personally made me ponder a great deal. While technological advancements undoubtedly make our lives more convenient, the direct link to job displacement feels quite complex.

The Lufthansa Group explained that this workforce reduction is due to 'streamlined operations' and 'technology (including AI)'. Specifically, administrative roles within Germany are expected to be impacted by AI, digitalization, automation, and operational integration. 🧐

Through these measures, the Lufthansa Group anticipates an annual cost saving of approximately 300 million Euros (about 440 billion Korean Won). This appears to be part of a strategy to integrate and enhance the efficiency of operations across various airlines within the group, such as Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and ITA Airways. 🌍

How Many Jobs Will Be Affected?

The Lufthansa Group currently employs approximately 101,700 people (as of 2024). The announced reduction of 4,000 jobs is the largest workforce adjustment since the pandemic and represents about 4% of the total workforce, a significant number. 😥
