As many of you may recall, last July, NASA decided to halt the 'VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover)' mission. As a mission that aggregated years of effort and investment, NASA's decision, driven by escalating costs, caused great disappointment among many in the scientific community. We thought VIPER's mission to explore ice and various resources on the lunar surface, and to collect crucial data for future human exploration, was lost.
Enter a New Partner, Blue Origin! 🤝
But NASA did not give up! After persistent efforts, NASA decided to seek collaboration with private companies to re-initiate the VIPER mission. And as a direct result, 'Blue Origin,' the space company founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has reportedly been given the opportunity to take over this mission.
On Friday, NASA officially announced that Blue Origin has been given the opportunity to develop a new VIPER mission plan under NASA's 'Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS)' program. Blue Origin is expected to utilize its currently under-development 'Blue Moon' lander, Mark II, to safely land the VIPER rover on the lunar surface and carry out its mission.
