"Running for My Life for the First Time" – A Survivor's Urgent Moments

A worker who was inside the building at the time of the incident vividly recounted the collapse. He was working inside the building when everything suddenly caved in.

The incident occurred at Calle Hileras, number 4, between Plaza de Ópera and Puerta del Sol, in the center of Madrid. It's hard to believe such an accident could happen in the busy city center after 1 p.m., when daily life was in full swing.

He described his experience as follows:

"Suddenly, the building collapsed from the inside. A massive cloud of dust rose, obscuring everything.

'I was running for my life for the first time. At first, I didn't have time to think about anyone else. I thought, I need to save myself first, and then, if I can, help others.'"

This individual was in charge of concrete pumping and, remarkably, it was his very first day working at this construction site. What a profound shock it must have been to experience such a horrific event on his first day.

Intact Exterior, Internal Collapse

What's even more astonishing is the worker's testimony: "The collapse occurred from within the building. The exterior walls remained intact." This fact brings a sense of caution, highlighting that even buildings that appear sound from the outside can harbor critical internal issues.
