FSD System Once Again Under Scrutiny by Federal Agency

According to Reuters, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 2.88 million Tesla vehicles equipped with the FSD system. This is due to over 50 reported traffic safety violations and numerous crash incidents related to the FSD system. As reported by The Washington Post, NHTSA is currently reviewing 58 complaints, which include 14 accidents and 23 injuries. 😟

What Issues Have Arisen?

Although FSD is designed as a driver-assistance feature that requires driver supervision, the following issues have been pointed out in this investigation:

  • Signal Violations: Instances where the vehicle ignored red traffic lights and proceeded.
  • Lane Change Errors: Dangerous situations where the vehicle crossed the center line against traffic flow, nearly colliding with oncoming traffic.
  • Disregard for Road Signals: Cases where road signs or signals were not obeyed.

Notably, NHTSA has expressed deep concern over six accidents where Tesla vehicles ran red lights and collided with other vehicles. Furthermore, with lawmakers pointing to several near-miss accidents occurring near railroad crossings, an investigation into the FSD system's performance in those areas is also planned. 🚆

Tesla's Response and Future Outlook

Tesla has reportedly released a software update for its FSD system recently. This investigation is understood to be in a preliminary evaluation phase. All eyes are on how this investigation will impact Tesla's autonomous driving technology development and when the FSD system will advance to a level where drivers can use it with complete peace of mind.

As this is an issue directly related to everyone's safety, we must continue to monitor the movements of Tesla and NHTSA going forward. What are your thoughts on Tesla's autonomous driving technology? Please share your opinions in the comments! 👇

Wishing for safe and enjoyable technological advancements, I will return with more news. 😊
